Dynamically, the Touareg feels slow and heavy, mostly because it is slow and heavy. The VR6 engine is saddled with 4895 pounds of curb weight, pulling it to 60 mph in a slow-for-this-class 7.8 seconds. The eight-speed automatic transmission doesn’t help, being reluctant to downshift unless the driver pushes the gas pedal through a resistant kickdown switch. Other feats are similarly dulled by the beefy weight—namely, braking: Despite good pedal feel and action, the Touareg required a long 185 feet to stop from 70 mph. In corners, too, the VW feels heavy, although body motions are well controlled.
